CAR DIFFERENCIAL MECHANISM - DIY kit for Students
Updated: May 1
This mode ls imul at s the mechanism of a differential gear used in cars and other wheel e vehicles. A differential allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster than the inner drive wheel during a turn. This is necessary when a vehicle turns in order to allow the wheel that is traveling along the outside of the turning curve to roll faster and to cover greater distance than the wheel on the inside of the turning curve. The average of the rotational speed of the two driving wheels is simply the input rotational speed of the driveshaft. An in crease in the
speed of one wheel is balanced by a decrease in the speed of the other. As part of the front and/or rear axle assembly, the differential plays an
integral role in how your car makes turns. The differential is designed to drive a pair of wheels while allowing them to rotate at different
speeds. This function provides proportional RPM s between the left and right wheels. If the inside tire rotates 15 RPM less in a turn than going straight, then, the outside tire will rotate 15 RPM more than going straight.
For example, when your vehicle goes around a corner, the wheel on the outside must travel faster than the wheel on the inside. The differential distributes equala mounts of torque to both wheels. This permits the wheels to react to resistance, or provide traction, to give the wheel more resistance to rotate less. The wheel with less resistance rotates faster.
Simply put, a differential is a system that transm its an engine’s torque to the wheels. The differential takes the power from the
engine and splits it, allowing the wheels to spin at different speeds.
The main components of the differential are:
1. Input pinion gear
2.Crown wheel gear
3. Differential cage
4. Differential star (Planet Gear)
5. Differential axle(sun) gear
HOW IT WORKS
Simply put, a differential is a system that transmits an engine’s torque to the wheels. The differential takes the power from the engine and splits it,allowing the wheels to spin at different speeds.
Working principle of differential system and its construction
When an automobile travels around a corner, the distance traveled by the outside wheels is greater than that traveled by the inside wheels. If the wheels are mounted on dead axles so that they turn independently of each other, like the front wheels of an ordinary passenger vehicle, they will turn at different speeds to compensate for the difference in travel. But, if the wheels are driven positively by the engine, a device is necessary which will permit them to revolve at different speeds without interfering with the propulsion system. To accomplish this purpose a system of gears called the differential is provided.
The driving axle is one of the cross members which supports the load of the tractor, and has the driving wheels at its ends. The driving a xlecons is ts of a housing, a differential, two axle shafts(half axles), and final drives (if required).
The differential is an important component of the driving axle. The main functions performed by the differential system are: Further reduces the rotations coming from the gear box before the same are passed on to the rear axles.
Changes the direction of axis of rotation of the power by 90 o i.e. from being longitudinal to transverse direction. To distribute power equally to both the rear driving axles when the tractor is moving in straight ahead direction.
Tod is tribute the power as per requirement to the driving axles during turning i.e. more rotations are required by the outer wheel as compared to the inner wheel – during turns.
